Getting old can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming but one of the perks of being on this planet for almost half a century is you have had the chance to watch and learn things over and over again to make a really solid judgement based on those humbling years of experience.
One of the things I have learnt which has liberated me and given me confidence is the following fact.
Everyone is a child deep inside and nobody really knows what they are doing 100% of the time.
Sounds crazy at first but the more you are aware of this fact, the more you observe people in a different way.
For example, world leaders. They are a very good example of humans who are winging it - making things up as they go along - hoping for the best.
Trust me, if you could listen to the voice inside their head at times you would be amazed at how much they make up on the spot. During tough moments I am sure many wish they could shout out for a parent to whisk them away to somewhere they don't have to deal with all of the stress.
Please don't misunderstand what I am revealing here.
I am not saying that humans cannot be intelligent and trained in a field to then know how to perform a function.
For example, a pilot obviously has learnt and knows how to fly an aeroplane. However, that same pilot deep within their mind, still reflects on how they have gone from being a child to sitting at the controls of a plane and flying it.
You see, everyone is witnessing their own lives from day one of being born. Everyone, in some way, or another, is acting out their life and waiting to see what comes along next. And they all wonder how will they cope when that next thing happens.
Many people expose this truth when undergoing talking therapy. Often even the most confident of famous performers are scared inside and often cannot understand how they get the mental strength to perform in front of thousands of people at a concert. For those who want to perform but have little confidence, knowing this will help you understand that even your heroes feel just like you, you are no different, if they can perform then so can you.
I hope I am making sense here. Maybe some readers do not understand and are shouting at this post saying, "I am an adult! I do not think I am a child! I know what I am doing!!".
Well to those people I say, "Go to your room and don't come out until you have thought this through" ... Hahaha ... sorry I couldn't resist that! It is the child in me coming out!
What is my point?
My point is, once you realise that everyone is a big kid at heart, once you realise that you share this human trait, you will start to be able to forgive people for errors they make. You will become more compassionate and patient. You will grow more confident.
Confidence is one of the greatest feelings you can have to counterbalance anxiety and phobias.
For example, if you have to give a presentation to a group of people or attend an interview, by realising that the people in front of you are all big kids pretending to be more grown up than you, it pops that anxiety bubble.
Always remain respectful of someone else but always remember that they are just as confounded by this thing we call "life".
