This is so frustrating!
We have all been there. Whether it is you, your child, your parent, a friend, someone at work or school. You know what I mean. You - or they - need to achieve something. Whether it is dieting for health, or completing a task that is going to improve things. And yet...
Either you (or they) do not want to start it, or start it and then give up. Why?
What 5 things can you do to make someone want to achieve a goal and stick with it:
✅ Help them set SMART goals. SMART goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. When people have SMART goals, they are more likely to stay motivated and on track.
✅ Be supportive and encouraging. Let the person know that you believe in them and their ability to achieve their goal. Offer encouragement and support along the way.
✅ Help them create a plan. Once the person has set their goal, help them create a plan for how they will achieve it. This plan should include specific steps, timelines, and resources.
✅ Hold them accountable. Check in with the person regularly to see how they are doing and to offer support. If they start to fall behind, help them get back on track.
✅ Celebrate their successes. When the person achieves a milestone, be sure to celebrate their success. This will help them stay motivated and on track.
Here are some additional tips that may help:
✅ Help the person identify their why. What is the reason they want to achieve this goal? Once they understand their why, it will be easier for them to stay motivated. Imagine you are asked to run a marathon right now. Would you do it? What if you were told that you needed to run a marathon to get medicine that will save a loved one's life? That would be your why? You need to find whys like this to REALLY motivate you every second until you achieve your goal.
✅ Break the goal down into smaller steps. This will make it seem less daunting and more achievable. The old adage is if you are asked to climb a mountain, you will look at it and say that it is impossible. And yet. With 1 step a day that mountain grows smaller as you climb it in manageable steps you can handle.
✅ Help the person find a mentor or coach. Someone who has already achieved a similar goal can offer valuable advice and support. If you cannot afford a coach or mentor, then try to find stories of famous people that inspire and motivate, share their success stories to inspire and teach what they did to achieve something similar.
✅ Encourage the person to take breaks. It is important to take breaks when working towards a goal. This will help them avoid burnout and stay focused. Rest is very important. If you are unable to move forward then the game is lost. Plan ahead what you can do and when.
To conclude:
Achieving a goal can be challenging, but it is definitely possible with the right support. By following these tips, you can help someone achieve their goals and stick with them.
